Report CardsAfter three years of research and development, St. Germaine School moved to a “standards-based” system for reporting student progress to parents. Many school systems, both public and private, are moving to reporting systems based on published state and local expectations for student achievement. The standards based system allows teachers to comment on specific learning strengths and areas which might need additional attention. A new grading code replaces the traditional A, B, C grades with terms that are more descriptive of student progress in each of the standards. Report cards are issued three times each year (trimesters) and are supplemented with mid-trimester reports. We truly believe that assessment of student learning is a daily, on-going process that involves both formal and informal sources of information. Teachers consider a variety of information in formulating their assessments. We are also aware that the report card is only a summary of a student's progress in the classroom. Samples of daily work, notes from the teacher, project rubrics, mid-term Progress Reports, and formal Parent-Teacher Conferences are additional ways to be aware of student progress.Parents receive a grade-level specific "content map" of the major areas and understandings contained in each area of the curriculum. In this way, they can keep informed of the specific "learning standards" being addressed.A "Successful Learner Traits" section of the report card focuses attention to the "non-content" areas of school life that are so essential to student success. This section gives a parent an indication of such factors as "Responsibility," "Cooperation," "Independence," "Quality Work," and "Communication."We are excited about our revised assessment system and would be glad to share additional information with you.The "Purpose of the Report Card"
section reminds us ... For further information about the new report card system, contact the school administration office at 708-425-6063 or email us.
